Sharing news about our talented designers and Makers
Welcome to our brand new Maker's Mrkt blog. You may be thinking "Why a blog, aren't blogs dead, do people even read these days?", to which we answer - blogs void of substance are dead, and this will be a blog of much substance! We know from our traffic that you enjoy our "Meet the Makers" posts so we decided to launch a general column so you can learn more about our Makers, us and why Maker's Mrkt is so essential in today's world.
Instagram is great, but it's also a flash in the pan, we want our site to develop as a platform, you can learn more if you wish, you can engage when you wish, and we can share important things about our new products, decisions and motivations for Mrkt. Mrkt is intended to build community, so it is essential that we can chat with you as our community until the glorious day when we can do so in person in a physical store.
Maker's Mrkt started in January 2018 as a personal hobby site, a collection of artists and Makers we know as friends and who inspire us personally. These Makers have guts, creating and marketing a product takes sacrifice, a lot of work and often tears and is an experience you can only truly appreciate if you have done it yourself. Within weeks we were in the top 1% of Shopify stores launched at the same time, and the feedback from our peers and the Makers themselves was the biggest reward.
This "hobby" site, while still not entirely self-sustaining has now started to move, require more time and is not far from no longer being just a hobby. We are constantly behind on Mrkt related emails as we find a new balance, but the Makers are supportive and, with honesty, people forgive the clunkiness and teething problems of a new store.
It has been interesting to watch the growth of Mrkt, but even more so to see patterns in shopping change around us. For the first time, we notice independent boutiques boycotting shopping frenzies such as Black Friday and the rise of the hashtag #whitemonday which encourages people to repair, reuse and shop what they need. While we realise that many of the items we stock are not "need" products we do find a common thread of people being more considerate of their purchasing and this makes us very happy!

Like all humans, we are far from perfect with our shopping decisions, but we do firmly believe that how we spend shapes the world we live in. We are only tiny, but we know that Mrkt could be the difference between an artist or designer surviving off their craft or not. Mrkt may be the store that encourages someone to consider what goes into the products they're buying and change the course of their consumption; we may be the store that sells a product that becomes a particular treasure for an individual. These small things all make our world and the lives of our Makers and customers genuinely better, and that is a pretty awesome feeling.
Moving forward we hope that you feel as excited about Mrkt (or Maker's Market as many people spell it), we welcome your feedback, engagement and involvement and we hope that there are some special things to tickle your fancy. Through this blog, we will keep you updated on everything new, events, special promotions and tell you more about our Makers and why we love them so much. We hope you will fall in love with the Makers as much as we have, and we hope that Mrkt becomes your go-to when shopping for gifts and shopping for yourself.
Here's to the new blog, we hope to see you here regularly!
